Christopher Lee Rios, better known by his stage name Big Pun, was an American rapper. Emerging from the underground hip-hop scene in the Bronx, he came to prominence upon discovery by fellow Bronx rapper Fat Joe, alongside Cuban Link and Triple Seis, and thereafter guest appeared on his 1995 album Jealous One's Envy.
Fat Joe's discovery of Big Pun in the mid-90s proved to be one of hip-hop's most crucial endorsements—the Bronx wordsmith emerged as Terror Squad's gravitational center, eventually becoming the first Latino rapper to achieve solo platinum status with *Capital Punishment* in 1998, a landmark that wouldn't be matched for years. His lightning-fast multisyllabic delivery and technical precision earned respect from NY's most demanding peers like Nas and Jay-Z, who both appeared on his debut, while his chemistry with fellow Latino rappers Capone-N-Noreaga solidified a Bronx-Queens Latin rap connection that redefined regional identity. Despite releasing only two studio albums before his death in 2000, Pun's cultural impact transcended commercial success—he fundamentally proved that Spanish-language identity and street credibility could coexist within hip-hop's highest echelon.
