R. Kelly

Robert Sylvester Kelly, known professionally as R. Kelly, is an American former singer, songwriter, and record producer.

The Chicago R&B virtuoso who dominated the '90s with *12 Play* and *TP-2.com* operated in hip-hop's margins despite massive crossover success—his influence on rap production and sampling runs deeper than his actual collaborations suggest. While "I Believe I Can Fly" transcended genre and "Ignition (Remix)" became inescapable, Kelly's hip-hop footprint remained surprisingly limited; his beef with Lil Wayne, sparked by a *Da Drought 3* diss, was quietly resolved through Birdman's diplomatic intervention on *We Been On*. The *Trapped in the Closet* saga proved he understood hip-hop's narrative ambition even as he remained fundamentally an R&B artist.
