Pro Era is an American hip-hop collective from Brooklyn, New York. The group is a collective of rappers and record producers that currently includes East Coast rappers Joey Badass, CJ Fly, Kirk Knight, Nyck Caution, Dessy Hinds and Aaron Rose, along with producers Chuck Strangers and Powers Pleasant.
Pro Era emerged from Brooklyn in 2012 as a defiant response to rap's drift away from boom bap fundamentals, with Joey Bada$$, Capital STEEZ, and Kirk Knight anchoring a collective that refused to compromise on sample-heavy production and intricate lyricism. The crew's influence rippled through the mid-2010s indie rap circuit despite minimal mainstream visibility, their aesthetic directly reviving the East Coast's golden-age DNA when trap dominated commercial radio. Capital STEEZ's tragic 2012 suicide marked the collective's darkest chapter, yet Pro Era persevered as a creative proving ground—Chuck Strangers and Powers Pleasant's production became as integral to the sound as the rappers' technical precision. While their commercial footprint remained modest compared to contemporaneous crews, Pro Era's uncompromising artistic vision established them as godfathers to the SoundCloud rap renaissance that followed.
