MC Hammer

Stanley Kirk Burrell, better known by his stage name MC Hammer, is an American rapper and dancer. He is known for hit songs such as "U Can't Touch This", "Pray", "2 Legit 2 Quit" and "Pumps and a Bump", as well as flashy dance movements, extravagant choreography and his namesake Hammer pants.

When MC Hammer's *Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em* went diamond in 1990, he became hip-hop's first certified mogul—a distinction that simultaneously made him a target and a cautionary tale about crossover success. His beef with LL Cool J crystallized a fault line in early-'90s hip-hop: could you dominate MTV and still command respect from the streets? Hammer's answer came through relentless touring and the undeniable hooks of "U Can't Touch This," but his legacy remains complicated, overshadowed by the perception that his dance moves and parachute pants obscured genuine MC skills. Yet dismissing him entirely misses the point—he proved hip-hop could be a global phenomenon before most rappers understood what that meant, paving the way for every crossover artist that followed, whether they admitted it or not.
