Lorenzo Dechalus, known professionally as Lord Jamar, is an American rapper, DJ, record producer, actor, podcaster and conspiracy theorist. He is a founding member of the hip-hop group Brand Nubian, which was formed in 1989.
The Bronx native emerged from Brand Nubian's conscious rap blueprint in 1993, but Lord Jamar's legacy extends far beyond the group's socially aware catalog—he became hip-hop's most vocal gatekeeper, drawing a hard line between cultural participants and cultural tourists. His decades-long critique of white rappers' place in the culture crystallized into a public feud with Eminem, whom Jamar branded a guest rather than a legitimate member of hip-hop; Eminem's response on "Fall" cemented their antagonism as one of rap's most ideologically charged beefs. Whether you see Jamar as a principled cultural custodian or an obstinate purist, his willingness to stake out uncomfortable positions has made him an inescapable voice in conversations about hip-hop's ownership, authenticity, and the boundaries of belonging.
