Just Blaze

Justin Gregory Smith, known professionally as Just Blaze, is an American record producer. Born in Paterson, New Jersey, Smith attended Rutgers University for three years before dropping out to pursue a career in music production.

Just Blaze's fingerprints are all over hip-hop's most consequential moment: as Roc-A-Fella's in-house producer, he co-shaped *The Blueprint* and *The College Dropout*, two albums that defined early-2000s production aesthetics. His signature move—flipping sped-up soul samples into propulsive, almost hyperactive beats—became the sound of an era, particularly on *The Blueprint* tracks like "The Takeover" and "N***a Please," where his work alongside Jay-Z proved that a New Jersey kid from Paterson could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the Neptunes and Timbaland. Though his connection count doesn't reflect his actual influence, Just Blaze's legacy lives in every producer who learned that chopped-up soul could make a crowd move harder than anything sampled whole.
