Michael Taylor Perretta, known professionally as Evidence, is an American rapper and record producer from Venice, Los Angeles, California. He is also a member of the group Dilated Peoples, as well as being one-half of Step Brothers with the Alchemist.
Evidence emerged from Venice as one of hip-hop's most underrated lyricists, building his reputation through Dilated Peoples while simultaneously crafting solo work that prioritized substance over commercial appeal. His 2007 album The Weatherman LP showcased production prowess and introspective storytelling that influenced a generation of underground producers, while his collaborative project Step Brothers with the Alchemist proved the chemistry between two West Coast architects could create timeless boom-bap. The "Search for Bobby Fischer" beef with Eminem—a subtle but pointed response on wax—demonstrated Evidence's willingness to stand on principle despite the obvious power imbalance, solidifying his credibility within hip-hop's competitive framework. What separates Evidence from peers is his commitment to independence; he's remained consistently prolific across multiple platforms without chasing trends, making him a blueprint for artists prioritizing artistic integrity over chart positioning.
