DJ Premier

Christopher Edward Martin, known professionally as DJ Premier, is an American record producer and DJ. He has been frequently lauded as one of hip hop's greatest producers by publications such as Vibe.

The scratch-heavy breaks and chopped soul samples that defined '90s New York boom-bap didn't emerge from nowhere—they came from DJ Premier's machines, first as Gang Starr's sonic architect alongside Guru, then as the producer behind Nas's "NY State of Mind," Jay-Z's "D'Evils," and Big L's "Put It On," tracks that became the blueprint for East Coast hip-hop. Premier's technical mastery—those stuttering drums, those perfectly isolated horn stabs—created a sound so distinctive that rappers lined up for beats, from LL Cool J to Kendrick Lamar decades later, yet he never chased trends or mainstream validation.
