Chuck D

Carlton Douglas Ridenhour, known professionally as Chuck D, is an American rapper, best known as the leader and frontman of the hip-hop group Public Enemy, which he co-founded in 1985 with Flavor Flav. Chuck D is also a member of the rock supergroup Prophets of Rage.

Carlton Ridenhour transformed the microphone into a weapon when he co-founded Public Enemy with Flavor Flav in 1985, anchoring the group as hip-hop's most uncompromising political voice. His booming, authoritative delivery on tracks like "Fight the Power" established a template for socially conscious rap that influenced generations—Nas built his entire career on the political foundations PE laid, while Kanye West has repeatedly credited Public Enemy's radical approach as foundational to his own worldview. Beyond the legendary group's seismic impact, Chuck D has sustained a prolific solo career spanning from *Autobiography of Mistachuck* through recent work like *We Wreck Stadiums*, proving his relevance never depended on nostalgia. His willingness to weaponize hip-hop against systemic injustice, rather than retreat into entertainment, established him as one of rap's greatest voices—period.
