Ab-Soul

Herbert Anthony Stevens IV, better known by his stage name Ab-Soul, is an American rapper. Raised in Carson, California, he signed with the indie record label Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE) in 2007, where he formed the West Coast hip-hop group Black Hippy alongside fellow California-based rappers Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q.

The most lyrically dense member of TDE's Black Hippy collective, Ab-Soul has spent over a decade constructing intricate conceptual albums that prioritize philosophical depth over commercial appeal. From *Control System*'s existential questioning to *Do What Thou Wilt.*'s psychedelic ambition, he carved out space within Top Dawg Entertainment's star-studded roster by refusing to simplify his vision—even as labelmate Kendrick Lamar dominated the conversation. His collaborative moments, like the haunting "These Walls," revealed how his baroque production taste and dense wordplay could elevate even the most experimental TDE projects.
