Aaliyah

Aaliyah Dana Haughton was an American singer, actress, dancer, and model. Known as the "Princess of R&B" and "Queen of Urban Pop", she is credited with helping to redefine contemporary R&B, pop, and hip hop.

Aaliyah's partnership with Timbaland on *Try Again* and *Are You That Somebody?* didn't just define her sound—it reshaped how R&B could infiltrate hip-hop radio without losing its soul, a blueprint that mattered enormously to how the genres merged in the late '90s. Working closely with Missy Elliott across multiple projects, she became part of a Blackground/Atlantic pipeline that connected Brooklyn's pop sensibilities to Virginia's experimental edge, while collabs with Jay-Z proved she could trade bars in rap's upper echelon despite being fundamentally an R&B artist. Her 1996 sophomore album *One in a Million* remains the gold standard for that crossover moment—not watered-down, not apologetic, just undeniable.
