8Ball & MJG

8Ball & MJG is an American hip hop duo from Orange Mound, Memphis, Tennessee. They met at Ridgeway Middle School in 1984.

Memphis's most underrated duo, 8Ball & MJG built an empire on trunk-rattling production and streetwise storytelling that predated the South's mainstream explosion by nearly a decade. Their 1994 debut *Comin' Out Hard* and follow-up *On Top of the World* established Suave House Records as a legitimate alternative to the coasts, proving the Dirty South had its own sonic language—one that didn't need New York or LA validation. Though their connection count sits modest on the graph, their influence ripples through every Memphis rapper who followed, from Three 6 Mafia's sonic architecture to the regional beef that would eventually flare with Yo Gotti over turf and label supremacy. What they lacked in crossover ubiquity, they made up for in staying power, remaining relevant longer than most of their '90s peers by refusing to chase trends.
